The Red Viper of Dorne versus The Mountain That Moves is arguably the most graphic sequence in George RR Martin’s A Storm of Swords novel. In it, Oberyn Martell, the Prince of Dorne more commonly known as The Red Viper, and Tywin Lannister’s bannerman, Gregor Clegane, called The Mountain for his massive physique, face off in Tyrion Lannister’s trial by combat in King’s Landing.
Some background to what you’re about to see. Robert’s Rebellion, where the united forces of the Starks, Baratheons, Arryns and Tullys, led an uprising against King Aerys II of House Targaryen, is the preceding event that drives Martin’s epic. The conclusion of the revolt saw King’s Landing, the seat of the royal family, sacked by Tywin Lannister’s army and the royal family brutally murdered.
Among them were Elia Martell, Prince Rhaeger Targaryen’s wife and sister to The Red Viper, and her children. The children, just infants at the time of the Sack, were widely believed to have been killed by The Mountain in front of their mother before he raped and ended her life. Oberyn Martell in A Storm of Swords has come to King’s Landing to seek justice against those who wronged his family.
Illustrated beautifully by Jeff Comsey, this is one of the most gut wrenching moments in the entire A Song of Ice and Fire series.
